I've had multiple dental professionals ask me something along the line of “Yoga will help me, right?”, or “Ive had this pain for a while, I should just start yoga and it will go away, right?”
It depends.
Saying yoga will help your pain, is like saying mouthwash will fix your teeth.
Maybe it will help prevent some future problems from happening, it will more than likely feel good after enduring a session, but what happens when there’s a pre existing problem.
I highly doubt you will be prescribing ACT as a treatment plan for someone who needs a crown placed, a wisdom tooth pulled, or needs a water pick/scaler for a ridiculous amount of plaque buildup.
Same goes for Yoga.
There are plenty of benefits here with yoga. Relaxation, breath work, general movement, stretching, and isometric strengthening. All great benefits.
And for some, these simple activities will take a world of difference in your simple cases of aches and pains.
But there’s a misconception. Yoga, more often than not, won’t fix your pain, and there are a couple of instances where it can make it worse!
Pain is our bodies protection system from actual or potential tissue damage. A lot of factors inform our bodies alarm bells of when and when it shouldn’t sound the pain alarm.
Our previous injuries and experiences, our thoughts and anxieties, our posture, our baseline mobility, strength, and endurance, as well as our home life, relationships and work environment can affect our pain levels.
Lets assume you either have some joint stiffness in your mid back, hip flexors, or knees from sitting at a desk. OR your shoulder blades are sitting in a naturally awkward resting position after years of doing cleanings, checks, procedures, and surgeries.
These baseline positions are your bodies way of saving energy and interacting with your world.
If you were to try a downward dog, sun salutation, or more advanced yoga sequence, your body will be fighting the strains and pulls of forcing yourself into a position your body does not want to get into.
This will ultimately increase your pain, or at a minimum do nothing to make your pain better.
So what should we do instead?
I couldn’t tell you here because everyones body moves differently and has a unique baseline resting posture.
So instead of more talk, lets jump on a free consultation to figure out your unique posture and movement capabilities, and put together a personalized plan to get you feeling better again!
