The Ultimate Guide to In Clinic Footwear

Let's upgrade those sneakers.

We have all had those long days in clinic where our feet just hurt. Sometimes we just are not used to the time on our feet, but other times it's the shoes we are wearing.

Anyone who is going to be on their feet all day treating patients needs a good pair of shoes to withstand the step count. But is comfort the only factor? Is it really that subjective?

Yes and no. Ultimately we want you wearing a pair of shoes that feel comfortable for you.

If you are used to a lot of padding in your shoes like Brooks, Adidas Cloud Foam, or even some Nikes, New Balance, or On Clouds, chances are you should stick with the padding.

Minimalist shoes with very little padding are touted as "better" because they force the muscles in your feet to work harder and that will somehow make you a more "functional" human being. Unfortunately this isn't the case, and more often than not, switching from highly padded shoes to minimalist will only make your feet feel worse and set you up for potential plantar fasciitis or ankle stability issues down the road.

Switching to minimalist shoes requires the additional appropriate strength and conditioning program to train your foot muscles, it wont happen magically on its own from the change in footwear.

If you don't have over pronation issues, a flat foot, or are actively training your feet muscles, go ahead and grab a pair of minimalist shoes, such as VIVO BAREFOOT.

For everyone else, here's the 2 factors we look at as biomechanics experts in the field of orthopedics.

First, is are they comfortable to wear straight away? Shoes really shouldn't require a break in phase.

Secondly, do they pass what we call the dynamic postural examination?

This is where things get interesting. When we refer to dynamic postural stability, we essentially want to know if you hips move freely and your Gait pattern is unaffected by the change in footwear.

In the orthopedic world, there are specific tests we used to determine the level of change in mobility around the pelvis.

Below you will find the list of shoes tested extensively for improving pelvic motion and dynamic postural stability:

Brooks Adrenaline GTS

New Balance 860 V13

Brooks Dyad 11
