The days of isolated TMJ Dysfunction treatments are long gone.
Direct work on Lateral Pterygoids, Masseters and occlusal surfaces to inhibit excess bite forces are still very appropriate treatments with significant effects. However, those efforts will be in vain in the long run if we don't address a critical underlying root cause of TMJ Dysfunction.
You see, the TMJ is connected fascially and neurologically to the Temporalis, Masseter, SCM, Scalenes, Deep Neck Flexors, Pecs, Abdominals, and Anterior Hip Musculature. This is important to understand, because when one of these areas are weakened due to inactivity, the others will up regulate and overproduce force.
For example, take someone who sits in an office chair at work or school desk, all day long. After a few months or years, their core becomes weak and that loss of stability leads to an increase in clenching force, neck stiffness, and TMJ Dysfunction. If we only treat the TMJ itself, our efforts are in vain.
And it makes sense, that these same compensatory mechanisms are responsible for other dental abnormalities such as tongue punching, lateral mandibular shifts, and poor occlusal symmetry.
All of which are cries for help from the rest of the body, that we need to stabilize.
